Crown of Gold

I left you standing in a
parking lot with no cars
Whimpering in an empty space
Caught between two neat white lines
The stars were out
I looked behind and
There you were.
And then.
You weren’t.
I was alone on the road.
Me and the devil.
He stroked me with a crown of gold
And told me I did right.
I did right – I did I did.
But then I remember
That night in December
When your heart was dismembered
By me.
the devil.
And a gas station employee.
